FIVE HUNDRED YEARS AGO When Rose woke up in the middle of the night, she was lying on the bed alone. The lamps had been put out, but the fire was still going. Someone was sitting near the hearth, his back to her. Still half-asleep, she thought it was Andrew. “Why aren’t you sleeping?” He turned to face her. It was Raine, not Andrew. “You are awake?” “Oh, it’s you.” She sat up and looked around the chamber.
