CHAPTER SIXTEEN – CAMPING OUT
After about an hour of driving, Mark cleared his throat. "Hey, I've got an idea that might cheer us up. There's a famous historical landmark not too far from here. Want to check it out?"
Laura hesitated. They were already so behind schedule, and after the picnic fiasco, she wasn't sure she was up for more surprises. But looking at Mark's hopeful expression, she found herself nodding. "Sure, why not? We're already soaked and late. Might as well embrace the chaos."
Mark's face lit up. "That's my girl! Trust me, this place is supposed to be really interesting. It's an old Civil War battle site, I think."
As they drove, the rain began to let up, eventually tapering off to a light drizzle. The landscape changed, becoming more wooded and hilly. Laura noticed that the roads were becoming narrower and less well-maintained.
"Are you sure we're going the right way?" she asked, peering at the unfamiliar surroundings.
