Blair's response left me feeling a little unsettled. Her level of concern went far beyond that of a typical friend.
Sophia, who'd been watching from the side, seemed equally perplexed, her eyes sharp with irritation and suspicion. Women had a keen sense for these things. She must have felt a strong sense of intimidation around her.
"Thank you for your offer, but this is something I need to handle myself," I said politely, declining Blair's help.
The issues between Abigail and me were numerous. No matter how things ended, it was something we had to work through on our own. Involving anyone else would only change the situation's nature.
"After all, Abigail is still my wife on paper," I added.
The words seemed to sting Blair. She gave a small, bitter laugh and shook her head. "You're right. Since you two are still married, I'd just be meddling."
