I forced myself to suppress the bitterness and unease churning within me as I picked up the fork and took a bite.
At that moment, it felt as though I couldn't taste anything at all. Every bite of food felt unbearably bitter, leaving a hollow, aching emptiness in my mouth.
After taking one mouthful, I handed a piece to Abigail. She seemed genuinely delighted by my gesture, her eyes brightening as she clasped my hand, her smile brimming with warmth.
"Samuel, I knew it! Deep down, you still care about me. I knew you wouldn't just abandon me," she said softly. Her gentle voice lingered in my ears.
I lifted my gaze to meet hers, staring at her indifferently for a moment before finally breaking the silence.
"Abigail, it's true that I was wrong to break things off with you and leave the country without a word back then. But haven't you punished me enough over all these years?
"I can't take it anymore. You keep torturing me like this, and I feel as if I'm suffocating, unable to breathe.
