Blair's persistence made it clear she wasn't content with being "just friends". I could tell that she wanted to use friendship as an excuse, and I wanted nothing more to do with her.
"Ms. Shepherd, please try to understand me. I don't want people gossiping about me anymore," I said sincerely. "I'll handle the matter between me and Abigail on my own. I don't need an outsider intervening. Do you understand what I'm saying?"
I didn't want an outsider to meddle in my personal affairs, nor did I want her to pester me recklessly.
Rebecca had warned me repeatedly to handle my affairs carefully and not hurt anyone's feelings. I had always kept that in mind and didn't want my problems to affect others.
Blair gently nodded, forcing a weak smile. "I see where you're coming from, but can't you give me a chance?"
She stepped closer with tears welling up in her eyes. "Just treat me as a friend. Even if it's just an ordinary friend, I'd be happy with that. Is that okay with you?"
