Chapter 67: Midnight snacks

"What are you doing?" Baron asked me. I paused mid-chew.
"I'm hungry," I said softly.
"You shouldn't be eating, Talia. It's past midnight; you should be asleep. You gave birth yesterday," he said as he grabbed my hand and gently led me to my room.
"But I'm hungry," I insisted. "If anyone had told me childbirth was this stressful, I might have opted out of it."
He scoffed. "As if that is possible," he said, not letting go of his grip.
"I'm fine," I said. "I feel more myself. It's thanks to the thing Cressida put on my belly that helped. What is that, anyway?" I asked, pausing to look up at him.
"I believe it's an herb that grows in the desert. Our desert tribes were the first to use it, and since they discovered its benefits, they shared it with the rest of us," he explained.

"Unfortunately, it was in short supply back then," he said. "We were still mostly transporting it from the desert, but now we have figured out ways to mimic th
