I thought as though we had to spend forever on the ship. It simply seemed too long, as if it kept stretching for time immemorial. The ship would just keep hitting against the waves, and sometimes I would get so scared that we would capsize.
"Judging by the number of storms, nothing’s going to happen to us," Lucia would say.
"And how do you know?" I often turned to her.
"Because it’s obvious. You’re not going to die. I’m not going to die. Neither of us is going to die, so we should be reassured," she smiled, rather tiredly.
"What did you mean when you said I have magic?" I couldn’t help but ask on the third night after she had told me.
She shrugged, waving it off with a flip of her hair. "Because you have magic—or at least, you will be prepped for magic."
"You see," she continued, "in order for anyone or anything to practice such things, one must be prepared. And such, of course, can only come about with—you guessed it—prepping."
