I walked up to hold Valerie's hand. "Valerie! I didn't want you to worry, so I didn't tell you about the surgery. Don't worry, though. I'm all fine now."
Valerie furrowed her brows. Her tone was distant but still affectionate.
"That's good. I've been too busy to visit you lately. You're not mad, right?"
I shook my head. "Of course not! By the way, we've been in Brightville for some time. I wonder how my parents are doing. I couldn't call them. Did they change their phone numbers or something?"
"Your parents?"
"Yeah. My mom's phone number was invalid. I think they changed their phone numbers."
Valerie fell silent. She sat on the couch and stared at me with a complicated expression.
Upon seeing her upset look, I couldn't help but ask, "What's the matter?"
She forced a smile. "Nothing. I forgot to tell you that your parents were on vacation outside the country. I was worried they'd be concerned, so I didn't tell you about your illness. Don't go bursting their bubble now."
