Chapter 28
VALERIA
Celeste and I slowly turn to each other, locking eyes. The fear in my veins is numbing up my whole hands, making it hard for me to even move my fingers.
So many questions are running through my mind, but this time, I don’t want them to be answered. I just want to get out of here and sleep and maybe wake up the next day to realize that the whole thing is a lie.
I take a backwards step toward the door. “Well, it looks like everything is sorted out.”
Celeste seems to be in as much denial as I am, because she says, “Very true. Maybe we should just… leave.”
“Right,” I squeak, and with that, we scamper out of the trophy room like a pair of spooked rats.
We shoot off into different directions like nothing happened, not even sparing a good night for each other. Not that we’re in that terms of closeness, but still. No glance, no anything. It seems that we share the same desire to forget everything.
