Quinn sat in her office, the room bathed in the dim glow of a single desk lamp. The silence was abruptly shattered by the sharp ring of her phone. She glanced at the caller ID and recognized the number immediately. Mrs. Woodwell. With a sigh, she picked up the receiver.
“Quinn speaking,” she said, her voice steady.
“Ah, Quinn,” Mrs. Woodwell’s voice oozed with false sweetness. “How lovely to hear from you again. I couldn’t resist the urge of calling to check-in on you. I’ve heard some distressing news about your business.” Quinn’s grip tightened on the phone.
“What exactly do you want, Woodwell?”
“Oh, nothing in particular, just want to have a little chat,” Mrs. Woodwell replied, her tone mocking. “I’ve heard that things have been rather…challenging for you ever since Gift was hospitalized. It’s such a pity, really.” Quinn’s jaw clenched.
