
“You are trying to destroy my daughter!” Cecile screamed.
“And you, if you know what is good for you, you should be careful what you say about me. If it is found that I did not steal your daughter’s necklace, I will sue you for slander,” Elena said.
“Fine, that is enough!” Daniel said. He had a feeling that Elena did not take it but knew where it was. 
Why did she keep hinting that they should get a private investigator and that they did not know Hannah’s character?
He remembered that he had not ended the call with Hannah, and he placed his phone in his ear.
“Hannah, since it is missing, the matter will be given to the police to handle. But if it is found that it was not stolen, it will be on your record. What will you do?” he asked.
“Police? Why did you call the police!?” Hannah screamed; her voice rang from the phone into the room. She was clearly panicked. Everyone with half a brain 

Daniel sat in the ambulance completely in thought. This entire day drained him. He was not sure what had caused Elena to behave this way. 
She used to be very agreeable; what happened?
He thought about this all the way to the emergency room. The doctors immediately started handling Melanie’s injury while he waited.
His sister texted him while he was waiting on the hospital bench, asking about Elena's arrest status.
Looking at the text, he recalled what Elena had said about Hannah and dialed his secretary’s number.
“Vivian, Find out what Hannah is doing abroad at the moment and all she has done in the past few years,” he instructed.
“You want to check up on the young miss, sir?” Vivian asked.
“Get a detective to find out what she has been doing, Vivian,” he instructed again. This time, I was slightly agitated.

The woman of high society avoiding Cecile or looking down on her has always been her sour spot. 
She was clearly a woman who had raised her son well, and he had brought her glory, but they looked at her as though she were some random woman from the street.
She jumped up to attack Elena, but Elena threw a slap, making Cecile yell in pain.
“How dare you slap my mother?” Daniel stood up to talk, but she slapped him too, much to his utter shock. 
“Any one of you who dares to spit nonsense will get a slap. Hurry up and hand over my family’s things!” Elena scolded. Daniel was in shock. 
He never thought there would be a day when Elena would slap him. 
Did she not love him the most? Was she not the one to do anything for him? Daniel was really confused. 
She looked more like she hated him than that she loved him. In fact, when he looked into her eyes, she obviously hated him and his family. 
When did this start? When did she start looking at him with those eyes?
“I gave you that gift on your wrist because it was important to me. Now, hand it back!” she basically said through her teeth.
Melanie hurriedly tried to check if Elena’s slap had left a mark, and sure enough, it had left a red handprint on her face. 
“Are you crazy? Why would you hurt Daniel?” Melanie shouted.
“That is your man, not mine. If all of you do not know our place, I will forget to use my hand and go straight to using a knife,” Elena said.
“Hand it over!” she scolded. Daniel slowly took off the watch from his wrist and handed it to her. Elena got her hands on it, so she turned away from him without care and faced Cecile.
“I am not giving you anything. This is mine!” Cecile covered the necklace with her hand. Right at that moment, Elena’s phone started to ring. 
She thought it was Janet calling back, as they had ended the call the last time she spoke, but it was Hannah, Daniel’s sister.
“You bitch! You stole the necklace my brother bought for me!” Hannah's voice entered Elena’s ears.
“It seems it is your sister. She must have gotten drunk and called the wrong number,” Elena said, ending the call. 
Daniel frowned at her words. The way Elena spoke, it was as though his sister was a drunkard. Before he could respond, his phone rang. Hannah was there.
“What is it? Why did you call Elena?” Daniel asked.
“Brother, she stole my necklace. The one you gave me on my birthday,” Hannah cried. Elena did not need to listen to what Hannah had said. 
“Why did you take Hannah? Necklace?” he asked.
“You bitch! You dare talk about your family heirloom this and that, yet you stole my daughter’s thing?” Cecile screeched like a banshee.
“Elena, you should hand it over; then maybe Auntie will hand over yours,” Melanie said, and she scoffed.
She turned and looked dead in Daniel's eyes. She had to admit that his suspicion hurt.
“If you just did research on your sister, you would find exactly where that necklace is. A simple private detective could find it in days. But as usual, you lack common sense to see people’s true nature. Why else would you allow a snake to wrap around you?” Elena spoke, glancing at Melanie's tight grip on his arm.
For some reason, he felt uncomfortable. He sensed that someone was catching him cheating. He shook this thought out of his head. 
Elena was no longer his wife, and even when she was, she was just a woman he married under circumstances.
“How about everyone just give back each other’s things?” Melanie asked, and Daniel sent her an appreciative look. He was glad that she was at least reasonable.
At this point, the butler rushed in.
“Sir, the police are here and are requesting to come in,” he said, and Cecile almost jumped out of her skin.
“Why are they here?” Cecile asked.
“Did you forget that I had someone call them?” Elena asked, and Cecile went pale. She could not believe that Elena actually called the police. She thought she was being blamed. 
If she refused to hand it over, it wasn't as though Elena could beat her up and take it; after all, her son was there. But she actually called the police?
“You should let them in,” Elena said, and the butler hurried away before Cecile could protest. Before she could do anything, two police officers walked in. 
“We were told that there was a theft in the residence,” one of the officers asked.
“More like the thief refused to hand over what was stolen. Officers, I have documents to prove that the necklace Mrs. Mathews is wearing is my family heirloom,” Elena said.
“She gave it to me!” Cecile said.
“Can you prove that she did so?” an officer asked.
“I...she gave me when she married my son; it was a greeting gift. There are papers and stuff for it,” Cecile said.
“Is this true?” the officers asked. Hearing Cecile’s words, they thought it was a family dispute.
“Yes. The documents also stipulated that all greeting gifts should be returned in the event of divorce. She refuses to hand it back. I can provide the documents if needed,” Elena answered, taking out her phone. 
She clicked on the digital copy and presented it to the police.
“She gave it to me; she cannot take it back!” Cecile shouted.
“Mother, hand it back already!” Daniel said. He was experiencing a headache.
“No! What about her? She had stolen Hannah’s necklace, and you are not doing anything about it,” Cecile said.
The police officers finally got a grip on what happened and looked to Cecile.
“Madam, if you do not hand it over to the owner, we will have to arrest you,” the officers said.
“Hand it over!” Daniel finally had enough of this farce. He looked at his mother and scolded her so loudly that she jumped slightly. 
Cecile could see that her son was serious. She dared not open her mouth again. She carefully took off the necklace with a pained expression and handed it over. 
Elena took it and carefully examined it to ensure it was undamaged before placing it in her pocket.
“Then what about Hannah’s necklace?” Cecile asked. Now that Elena had taken away her favorite necklace, she did not want to let it go.
“Officers. She also stole something from my daughter: an expensive diamond necklace. You have to investigate,” Cecile said.
The officers looked to Elena, who seemed unperturbed and somewhat felt there was a misunderstanding.
“Officers, I also think it should be investigated. That necklace is really easy to find if someone bothers to try, but they all know nothing about their daughter’s character, which is why they remain stupid,” Elena said.
“You dare call me stupid,” Cecile fumed.
“I think this should be filed in the station too. Filing a false report is a serious matter, as it can impact your public records. So, we should make the report under the owner's name that claims it has been stolen,” Elena said, and Cecile froze.
