Chapter 2 The unfaithful wife
In the days that followed, Amelia grappled with a decision that felt impossible. The twins growing within her were a testament to love and life, yet Ethan's disapproval cast a long, dark shadow over her joy.
She spent the nex few days in bed, thinking about the sour turn her life had taken. Emily did her best to cheer her sister up, but to no avail. Over the course of the days, Ethan made no move to patch things up with her. He didn't care and she was fast realising that maybe he'd never cared.
What happened to the man she fell in love with? The man she'd given herself to so completely to? How could he deny the pregnancy? He wasn't poor, far from it. He owned companies all around the country and was a billionaire according to Forbes.
Emily came in that evening, and like always, Amelia buried her face in the sheets. She didn't feel like talking or moving in fact. She lay still, hoping that Emily would simply drop her food and water and leave like she's been doing these past few days; instead, Emily pushed the covers back and sat on the bed.
“It's time to stop moping, Amelia. How long do you plan to stay in bed?”
Amelia groaned and struggled to get the covers back over her head. If she had to, she'll stay in bed till it was time to give birth to her babies. Maybe when they were born, Ethan would have a change of heart. Something inside her still held faith.
“Amelia, you should brace yourself for the impact of what's to come. Your mother-in-law and Dad are in the living room, and I'm sure they'll be making their way here soon enough. Ethan's with them as well.”
At that, Amelia shot up from the bed. Why was her mother-in-law here? And her father? What had Ethan done? She knew without a doubt that they he'd told them about her pregnancy, but what did it mean? Did it mean that he'd accepted the twins?
The door creaked gently open and Ethan's mother, a tall Brunner who dressed herself in the latest fashion and only in designers, came in and sat beside Amelia. Soon, Amelia's Dad followed, his gruff exterior and the frown on his face didn't foretell good news.
“What is this I hear, Amelia?” Her father spoke before Ethan's mom could. His eyes bore no warmth. “You're pregnant by someone else? Why?”
Amelia looked to her sister for some support. She still felt like it was all a dream–a horrible dream.
“And at this point in your marriage? This alone is scandalous to this family, Amelia”. Her mother-in-law said, her voice stern.
Amelia imagined the older woman smiling inwardly at the turn of events. She'd never liked Amelia and finally things were going her way.
Just then Ethan entered the room and leaned on the door. He had his hands folded behind him and he stared directly at Amelia and so hard that she felt goosebumps. He looked at her with so much hate that she felt hot tears slide down her cheeks.
“No..no…no” Amelia stuttered, trying to catch her breath. She felt like she'd been ganged up on in the worst way possible. Someone had yanked her out of her fairy tale life and dropped her in this cruel parallel universe.
“Is it true that the babies belong to some guy name Ty?” Her father proded.
Amelia turned to her husband as hot tears fell from her cheeks. “Tell them the truth. Why are you doing this to me?” She truly didn't understand.
But Ethan turned away from her and spoke to his mother instead. “I'll keep this marriage to her if she removes that pregnancy. I'll not raise someone else's kids.”
At that, Amelia grew angry. She grew so angry that all she saw for a while were spots and stars. The room faded until it was just her and Ethan. She stood up from the bed and charged at him.
She shoved him hard, and he stumbled backwards, stunned.
“How dare you? When did you become this monster?” She asked, her voice angry, and her hands shaking with anger. “How dare you turn on me this way? It's better to say you never wanted kids than to get me pregnant and not be man enough to raise them.”
Ethan hated his teeth at her, his own anger rising.
“I want you out of this house before dawn tomorrow. If you won't get rid of these…” his eyes flickered to her stomach, then he swallowed and continued. “Then I'll file for a divorce, and you can be free to raise them with Ty.”
Amelia shoved him again with all her rage. “I don't need you. I'll raise them on my own if I have to.”
A cold smile crossed Ethan's features. “Alright then. You're fired from the company, and you are not to take anything from our joint account. You'll leave this house with nothing just the way you came into it.”
Amelia stared at him. She tried desperately to find the man she'd called her husband for two years, but there was no trace of him left.
She turned to her mother-in-law, the triumph in the older woman's eyes were clear.
“I'll make sure this stays away from the press.” The older woman said while doing her best to hide her satisfaction.
Her father shook his head and walked away, embarrassed by her. He couldn't believe it was the girl he'd raised. One by one they all filed out of the room, leaving only Emily.
When they were gone, Emily gathered Amelia in her arms as she sobbed.
“I'll make him pay someday.” Amelia said to her sister, in between sobs. “I'll make him regret this.” It was the anger speaking, and she had lots of that stored away.
She didn't know where she was going to start from, but she knew deep within her soul that she would rather die before letting any harm come to her little ones. Amelia sat on the floor, with Emily cradling her as she wept.
“What are you going to do now?” Emily asked, her face a mask of concern.
Amelia smiled wryly at her sister. “Anything I can.” And she meant it. An idea began to form in her mind. If she couldn't take anything from the joint account, she might as well sell some of the valuables she had acquired as a billionaire's wife. All those heavy diamonds and expensive trinkets. Those were hers, and she knew they'd be worth alot when pawned.
She turned to her sister. “Emily, take as many of my jewelry as you can on your way home today. Leave none behind or if you do, make sure they're not so expensive. Take the gold and the diamonds, all of it. Even if Ethan and his mother are crazy enough to search me before I leave this house, they'll never suspect you, especially if you do it today.”
Amelia had decided she would grab her things and go as far away as she could from Ethan.
Emily smiled down at her sister. “I had thought about taking you along with me to Canada for my residency. We can both work part time jobs if we need to, but it's a nice place to raise kids. I'll go for my medical residency and still be able to look after you and the kids.”
Amelia wasn't sure what to say. Her sister was everything to her, ever since they were kids. Emily always had her back against their father who was hot tempered. Now it seemed like it was going to be just the two of them against the world–again.
The two sisters sat on the floor in silence. The road they'd chosen wasn't going to be an easy one, but it was the right one, Amelia knew it.
