Stan's eyes remained closed, his body savoring the warmth of his bed. He could hear the phone ringing in the distance, but he didn't bother to get up. He was too exhausted from the early morning wake-up call, courtesy of Emily's school schedule. His mind drifted back to his yacht. He had been working towards buying it for months , and he was very close. Just one more day, he thought to himself, and he could finally set sail and leave all his worries behind. The phone continued to ring, but Stan ignored it, his focus on the peaceful escape that awaited him on the open waters. He finally woke up hours later, he checked the time and realised he hadn't fed Claire since morning, he immediately got out of bed, picked his car keys and drove off to where he had kept Claire hostage.
