Chapter 55: Nothing
Rachel sat in the small, dingy room that had become her prison, her heart heavy with despair. Eleanor had locked her in here, giving strict orders to the man she called Vargas to feed her only once a day. The room was barely more than a cell, with no windows and only a single, flickering bulb hanging from the ceiling. The walls were bare and cold, and the air was thick with the stench of dampness and neglect. Rachel was treated like an animal—no, worse than an animal. Even the most neglected of creatures deserved better than this.
Her thoughts drifted back to Emma and Alexander, the only people she could rely on. She hoped they had thought to reach out to Michael. He was the only one who could assist them now, the only one who might be able to trace her whereabouts. And Emily—how she hoped Emily was recovering her memory. The truth that Emily held could bring Eleanor’s whole world crashing down, and that was the only thing keeping Rachel going.
