His hand rested on Emma’s shoulder, offering silent support, but even he couldn’t hide the fear in his eyes. The man who had always been her rock now looked as shaken as she felt. The ambulance jolted as it turned a corner, and Emma’s heart leaped into her throat. She glanced at the monitor—Emily’s heartbeat was irregular, the beeps coming slower, more sporadic. “Stay with me,” Emma pleaded, squeezing Emily’s hand hard
