Chapter 4: Let's go out on a date.
Madison settled into her desk, feeling a familiar comfort she hadn't known for years.
Alone in the spacious office, she took a moment to admire its layout. The floor-to-ceiling windows were lined with potted plants, a touch Madison deeply appreciated.
She quickly logged into her work account. Mark had sent her a document for a new design request.
Madison focused on her work, reviewing the file thoroughly before beginning her sketch. She put in non-stop work from early in the morning until late at night, even having William deliver her lunch.
Noticing her office light still on, Mark stopped by and knocked.
"You're still here?"
"I just wrapped up the design based on the client's brief from your file," Madison replied with a smile. "I was just getting ready to leave, and then you walked in."
Mark looked at her, a bit surprised, and said,
"You know, the client gave us a week. You don't need to hurry."
He couldn't help but admire her dedication to her work.
Mark examined the sketch she had made. Madison had captured every detail beautifully, showcasing her talent even on a small piece of paper.
"I've always worked like this; I prefer to finish things in one go," Madison explained, remembering her old work habits.
Glancing at his watch, Mark asked,
"I reserved a table in a fancy restaurant that just opened. Would you join me as my date tonight?"
Madison paused, thinking about her children at home. She didn't immediately accept.
"I need to check in at home first."
"Of course," Mark replied, stepping out to give her privacy.
She called Emma, and then Liam took the phone.
Hi mom?... He spoke into the receiver.
"Uhh, hey Liam, how are you?" Madison was surprised that it wasn't Emma. He told her he was okay, and when she asked about Emma, he told her she was playing with Ava.
Okay, run along and tell her I won't be coming home on time, so you all shouldn't wait up.
In his usual mature way, he assured Madison that he and Ava were fine and encouraged her to focus on her evening.
Reassured about her kids, Madison picked up her purse.
"Boss, everything's clear on my end."
A smile flickered across Mark's face. "Excellent, let's go."
Soon, they arrived at the restaurant. It was indeed fancy, like he said; this upscale gourmet haven exudes sophistication with its plush decor and soft ambient lighting. Culinary artistry takes center stage as master chefs craft exquisite dishes from locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. Impeccable service and an extensive wine selection elevate the dining experience, making it a culinary voyage.
William was there, holding a set of formal clothes for Madison.
"You may want to change into this; it was prepared in a hurry. I hope it fits," Mark said.
Madison was surprised and grateful. She hadn't expected Mark to think of such details.
"Thank you; I'll just take a moment to change," she responded, appreciating his thoughtfulness.
Mark gave a gentle smile. "No rush."
Madison was then led to the ladies room in the restaurant to change.
Williams, despite being a man, had impressive makeup expertise. Madison realized that everyone around Mark was exceptional and remarkably skilled.
As she looked at her transformed reflection, she remembered attending such an outing before but never feeling as radiant as she did now.
William, seeing her in the mirror, remarked, "Looks like I did a pretty good job, don't you think? ."
"You're being humble. It's been ages since I've gotten this dressed up. Thanks," Madison said.
William gathered his things to leave. "It's all part of the job. You should head to your table now."
Madison, her gown sparkling, stepped out of the room. She instantly caught everyone's eye, with women casting curious glances her way.
People murmured, "Who is she?"
"I've never seen her before."
"She's beautiful. I would love to meet her."
Madison ignored these comments, not assuming they were about her.
"Madison," he called out. ?This way," he continued, standing behind a chair she pulled out.
Seeing him, Madison felt a wave of relief. "There you are."
Mark motioned for her to link arms with him. "Sorry about tonight's impromptu outing. It's also an opportunity for you to meet some important people in our industry."
She linked her arm with his, gratefully responding, "Thank you."
Madison felt nervous because she had never been in a situation like this, attending a fancy restaurant with someone she barely knew.
The thought of accidentally saying or doing something wrong and becoming the subject of gossip loomed in her mind.
Mark sensed her discomfort and leaned in to whisper,
"Just keep smiling tonight. Leave the rest to me."
Relieved, Madison looked up at him, their eyes meeting in a moment of connection.
"Okay," she agreed.
Madison was still a bit uneasy, but she didn't let it control her as she put on a gleaming smile.
It's been a while since I went on an outing like this," Madison told Mark softly.
She didn't realize that the whispers around them were focused on her, sparked by curiosity about the woman accompanying the usually solitary mark.
Coincidentally, Henry and his wife, Taylor, happened to be in the same restaurant too. Noticing Mark and his plus one not far away, Taylor discreetly mentioned to Henry that his uncle Mark had brought a female companion.
Henry looked in the direction Taylor indicated, his surprise evident.
"He's never been seen with a woman before." Taylor told him.
Then, Henry caught sight of Mark, accompanied by an exceptionally attractive woman. Something about her seemed familiar.
Taylor, intrigued, suggested, "Let's go say hello," and began leading Henry toward them.
Upon getting closer, Henry recognized Madison. He was shaken; his expression turned uneasy, surprised to see her with his uncle.
"Uncle, it's unexpected to see you here!" Frank said, trying to mask his discomfort with a faint smile.
Mark gave a small nod. "I'm here to introduce my new jewelry designer to our industry friends." The restaurant is supposed to be a venue for a planned gathering that Mark and his friends planned to talk business and also chill out at.
Madison, meanwhile, had also spotted Henry. On just her second day back in the country, she found herself face-to-face with this jerk. The encounter was as unexpected as it was unwelcome.
Taylor, observant as she was, noticed Madison's lingering look toward Henry.
However, accustomed to Henry's usual appeal, she assumed Madison's attention was just another example of his allure and didn't think much of it, feeling a sense of pride instead.
"A new designer?" Henry cast a disparaging glance at Madison.
"Uncle, be careful. These days, anyone can fabricate their credentials and claim to be a designer." He continued, trying to make his uncle think differently towards Madison.
Mark's expression turned cold at Henry's insinuation.
"I'm well aware of her talent. In fact, the ring design you admired was her creation. I'll send you her design drafts tomorrow."
I was just insinuating, uncle; you cannot trust anybody these days," Frank said. Madison remained quiet, not saying a word as she listened to their conversation.
