Olivia took her time choosing the right words. Finally, in a stiff voice, she said, "I'll mention it to her, but she might not agree."

Jacob changed the subject. "It's my dad's birthday in a couple of days. Since I can't be there, please go and have a meal with them."
"Okay," Olivia replied. She didn't notice how tightly she was gripping the hem of her shirt, which was now damp with sweat from her palm.
There was still some time left, but Jacob suddenly said, "I don't have anything else to say. You should head back now."
"Alright, but take care of yourself here," Olivia said gently.
"I will."
Before she could leave, Jacob asked, "Why has the police department been so lenient with me lately?"
He was referring to their relaxed visitation rules. Worried that he might start overthinking things, Olivia quickly said, "It's close to the holiday season, so they're probably relaxing the rules a bit."
