Jennifer was lost in thought when she noticed stirring at the mouth of the street. A dark figure stood near the lamppost just outside her building. Her heart skipped a beat. She leaned across, trying to see it well. But the figure was too far, too still to see. Then it turned away, walked off, and vanished into the dark face of it. Her chest tightened. It could be anyone. A neighbor. A delivery guy. But her instinct said otherwise. She stood up suddenly and locked the door to the balcony. She would tell Byron in the morning.
