Chapter 20
Sunlight was filtering through the half-drawn curtains, creating a dreamy golden patch in Jennifer’s bedroom. Alongside this was the scent of warm tea and fresh toast. Byron stood at the doorway with a tray. He still had on that same clothes he wore yesterday, but somehow it did not seem to bother him. His hair was a little messy, and underneath his eye were faint shadows. He had not slept very much.
In bed, Jennifer was propped up, a pillow held behind her back, the arm still hanging in a sling. A little throbbing sensation at the head still existed, but not as bad as yesterday. There was a tugging smile in the corners of her lips when she saw Byron.
"You need not have made breakfast," she said softly.
"I know," he said, moving the distance towards her. "But I wanted to."
He gently puts the tray on her lap without disturbing her injuries. Toast, scrambled eggs, and a cup of chamomile tea were there.
"Thanks," she mumbled, voice slightly shaking. "For everything."
