Chapter 13
Byron held the flashlight still. He died at the instant Jennifer breathed. The only sounds are her gasping breaths and the distant tinkle of shattered glass. The piece of metal chain that Devlin had handed to her hangs in her hand; trembling fingers clutched it, while her knuckles turned white.
The air was pushed away just as though it was heavy, making it even harder for her to breathe. She stared at the open sliding door through which Devlin had vanished. He had gone as quickly as he appeared.
Byron took her by the arm and pulled her back from the door, slamming it shut. Locking it, he then shoved a nearby chair beneath the handle for good measure.
"Are you okay?" he asked, glancing at her over quickly.
She nodded, though her body said otherwise. The heartbeat raced. The skin felt clammy. And the mind was stuck replaying Devlin's voice: If you don't leave this house tonight... you won't get another chance.
