The absence of the Rogue pup is already horrible to begin with. But the laugh that Larkin lets out when it’s not there makes my heart sink even further.
I stagger back, my body suddenly feeling too heavy for me to even stay upright. The only reason I don’t fall right down to my knees is the guard holding me up by the handcuffs. So many questions are running through my mind and yet I have answers for none of them. None at all. The only thing I can process right now is the shock of the pup not being there, because I remember perfectly how we put it there.
And it’s not like it escaped either. If it did, there would have been traces of ash and blood all over the box and the floor. The place should have been a mess. And if it did come out through the fireplace again, then the mess should be there anyway.
Just a single trace. Something. Anything. Right?
But how come it just vanished like it has never been here in the first place?
