Chapter 50: A semblance of freedom

I was glad. I concluded that as I continued to enjoy the car ride taking me to God knows where. "What's your name again? Sorry, I forgot," the kind blonde lady asked me.
"Diana. And it's okay. I'm not that memorable."
She laughed and shook her head. "No, that's not true. You're very pretty. No offense, but you have this very interesting kind of beauty. It sort of makes me want to keep staring at you. I hope you don't mind that, of course."
I shook my head. "No. It's strange to get this kind of compliment, I guess."
I told her a few things about myself but made sure to never give away too many details.
"Foster family?" she asked. "Oh my goodness. I didn't think they really did that here in Europe. You see, I'm American, and I moved here decades ago with my parents when I was just a kid. I know that Americans like to practice the foster system, but I didn't know that such a thing really was common here."
