Chapter 30: The Young Alpha

Diana "Withdraw from what?" I asked, hearing my heartbeat quicken in pace for no good reason. "Everybody. I knew he was bottling things up inside, but what could I have done? I wasn't his mother. I was mainly his nanny. And at a very young age, after losing his parents, he said he needed to get started with his duties as an Alpha. But he was a child." "How old was he?" I asked. "He was barely 10 years old when he said he wanted to take over the pack by himself. Everyone—Elder Dane, Melissandra, even Lazarus and the other council members—was so worried for him. And so Dane decided to become his mentor and show him the ropes. It was painful to watch. Ten-year-old boys were supposed to be mischievous, they were supposed to play among their mates, but he, oh dear, he was fully engrossed in his role. And that was when I believe something must have broken inside him or at least got sealed off. One day he told me he never thought he would ever have time for love. When I asked why he thoug
