Chapter 26: Teary-Eyed Reunion

Throughout the night, I could hardly sleep. So much so that Madam Gretchard questioned me about it the morning after.
"You look terrible, my dear. Not enough sleep?" She pressed gently, placing her hand on mine.
"Just excited, I guess."
"I can imagine. A long-lost friend, not definitely lost, but doing good despite those terrible people. I'm so happy for you, my dear."
"Thank you, Madam."
"Are you all right? Shouldn't you be smiling when you know you're about to meet your old friend?"
"Hardly friends, Madam Gretchard. We just met and we, I guess, clicked. Girls at the same age. But she never knew who I was. Neither does she ever know what I went through. Does she?"
"Does she need to? At least it's time she shouldn't need to, but now, she'll definitely understand the absence was not your fault."
"Maybe." I chuckled nervously.
