"It is beautiful," I whispered to myself as I fed myself. "Yes, he is," I said, taking a pause from eating and looking at the infant sleeping beside me.
"Mama," William said, uncertainty in his eyes as they shone blue and scared. "Can we play?" he asked, his voice soft and uncertain.
I smiled at him, but the weight of Niklaus in my arms made it difficult to rise. "In a little while, sweetie. Niklaus needs me right now."
William's face fell. "You always say that."
I widened my eyes. "What do you mean by that?" I asked, my eyes white. "When have I ever said that?"
William shook his head. "You said it yesterday. And the day before. And the day before that. Ever since you came back and everything became fine, you've been saying it. You don't like me anymore," he said, sadness staining his features, his little fists bold.
Guilt pricked at my heart. "I promise, William. Just a bit longer."
