Maddox and I sat together on a couch facing the rest of the families in our private living room. Anyone could smell it in the air, the subtle flair of tension breeding amongst us. Were we to be blamed? Of course not. These past few days, the Chief Elder has rolled out nothing but bad news for us. But for some reason, I wasn’t scared this time. A part of me knew the era of the storm had passed. If there was still another, Gramps would have told me. He always loved giving me spoilers.
“Chief Elder, if this announcement of yours is bad news I would suggest that you postpone it for later. Desiree and I just woke up after a long time,” he held my palm. “Our bodies still need rest so…”
The Chief Elder laughed. “So I am now the bearer of bad news?”
“Of course not!” Maddox replied sharply while the other laughed awkwardly. Only a fool wouldn’t read in between the lines.
The old man laughed again. “Once I’m done, you all will conclude whether it is bad news or not.”
