CHAPTER FIFTY FOUR - THE TURNING POINT
Shoulders hunched in her raincoat, she hurried across the street and ducked into the entryway of the cafe. Through the large plate windows, she had a clear vantage of Sophia and Jonathan's booth. Taking a fortifying breath, Ava thumbed on the voice recorder and leaned in as close as she dared, straining to make out their hushed conversation over the ambient noise of the cafe.
"...cannot become unraveled at this point," Sophia was saying, her tone low but insistent. "We're too close."
Jonathan's expression was pensive as he nodded slowly. "You're certain these new records will be enough to turn the board solidly against Max?"
"I have all the documentation proving his malfeasance, tucked safely away," Sophia purred. "The board members are practical men - once presented with the evidence of his selfishness and illegal money trails, they'll have no choice but to side with your claim on moral and legal grounds."
