CHAPTER 32 A STAND

As Jane made her way back to the apartment that night, her step had a bounce in it that hadn't been there before. She felt a sense of purpose, a sense of belonging that she hadn't expected to find in the chaotic city of New York. When she arrived home, her aunt was already there, sitting in the living room with a cup of tea and a frown on her face. "Where have you been all day?" she demanded, her voice sharp and accusatory. Jane, however, was undeterred. "I was out," Jane replied, her chin held high. "I found a restaurant where they offer free meals to those in need, and I'm going to start volunteering there. They need all the help they can get." Her aunt's frown deepened, her brows drawing together in confusion. "A free restaurant? But why would you want to waste your time like that? Don't you realize who you are? You're the future Duchess of Wellington! You don't need to be playing at charity work." Jane's jaw clenched, her resolve hardening. "That's the thing, Aunt Beatrice,"
