The carriage rattled along the familiar cobblestone streets, drawing Jane back to the imposing Harrington mansion in Compton. Despite the grandeur of her new life as Duchess of Haverbroks, a knot of apprehension tightened in her stomach as she approached her childhood home.
Inside, the air hung heavy with the same musky scent of old books and polished wood Jane remembered from her youth. Lady Harrington, her mother's impeccable posture belying her advancing years, emerged from the drawing-room, her face softening into a rare smile at the sight of her daughter.
