Olivia grinned, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Scored! Turns out there's a faulty wire in the library's electrical box. A flick of a switch, and boom! Instant chaos."
Lucian chuckled, a dark humor flickering in his eyes. "Olivia, you're a menace. But a brilliant one."
The rest of the day flew by in a whirlwind. Olivia, ever resourceful, found them some outrageously fancy clothes – think emerald green silk that swished like a feather duster and a velvet suit with enough gold embroidery to blind a bat. Jane felt ridiculous, but there was no time for wardrobe malfunctions.
As dusk settled, casting long shadows over Haverbrook, they crept out of their room, feeling like they were playing dress-up gone wrong. Bartholomew, looking like a nervous wreck who'd just seen a ghost, was waiting by the stairs.
"My Lord, My Lady," he stammered, bowing clumsily. "The carriage is ready."
A tense silence followed. Lucian cleared his throat. "Excellent. Lead the way, Bartholomew."
