CHAPTER 10 FREDERICK WELLINGTON

Duke's restaurant - named after Fred's friends on discovery that he was the future Duke of Wellington - was a haven to many. The small restaurant had been inaugurated during Fred's second year in Michigan, a feat to touch lives as was his virtue. Mornings usually had free coffee for those who couldn't afford and tea for those who preferred tea. Soups were mainly served freely in the afternoons and in the evenings, Fred invited his friends from college to bid on glasses of wine. That way, there was enough money to run the philanthropic side of the restaurant. Fred stood behind a table in the bustling soup kitchen, clad in a pristine white apron. His bright smile welcomed the line of hungry people waiting for their meals. "Good evening, Carl," he said warmly, handing the man a heaping bowl of piping hot soup and freshly baked bread. "How about some hearty beef stew to warm you up?" Carl took the meal gratefully, his smile genuine. "Much obliged, Fred. You always know what I like." "T
