CHAPTER TEN – THE BOSS INTERVENES

The next hour was spent explaining everything to Mr. Thompson – Cassie's financial troubles, Tony's threats, and Lisa's campaign of rumors. To Cassie's surprise, Mr. Thompson listened with growing concern and sympathy. "I had no idea things were so difficult for you, Hartman," he said gruffly. "Why didn't you come to me sooner?" Cassie shrugged, feeling a lump form in her throat. "I was ashamed, I guess. I didn't want to seem weak or incapable." Mr. Thompson shook his head. "There's nothing weak about asking for help when you need it. From now on, I want you to come to me if you're having problems. We'll figure something out." He turned to Lisa, his expression stern. "As for you, we'll be having a very serious discussion about your behavior. Spreading rumors and creating a hostile work environment is completely unacceptable." Lisa nodded, her eyes downcast.
