CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SEVEN – ALMOST APPREHENDED
"Are you okay?" Florian asked, his knuckles white on the steering wheel as he navigated through the town's narrow streets.
Cassie nodded, still catching her breath. "That was close. Too close. Did anyone see you take the car?"
"I don't think so," Florian replied. "But we're not in the clear yet. Look."
In the rearview mirror, Cassie saw two black SUVs turn onto the street behind them. Her heart sank. "They're following us."
Florian's jaw clenched as he pressed the accelerator harder. The old sedan groaned in protest, but picked up speed. They weaved through traffic, taking sharp turns in an attempt to lose their pursuers.
"Hold on," Florian warned as he made a sudden turn down an alley. The car scraped against the narrow walls, but they emerged on the other side, momentarily out of sight of the SUVs.
They drove through the night, taking back roads and constantly checking for signs of pursuit. Exhaustion pressed down on them, but fear kept them alert.
