CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWO – THE ART OF SUBTERFUGE
The next morning, Cassie stood in front of the bathroom mirror, barely recognizing herself. Her once-blonde hair was now a rich auburn, courtesy of the hair dye Maria had procured. Subtle makeup techniques had altered the shape of her eyes and the contours of her face.
"What do you think?" she asked, turning to Florian.
He stared at her, a mix of awe and sadness in his eyes. "You look... different. Beautiful, but different."
Cassie touched his cheek, feeling the stubble that was the beginning of a beard. "You're changing too," she said softly.
Florian nodded. "It's necessary. But it doesn't change who we are underneath."
Maria knocked on the door frame. "How are we doing in here? Cassie, that color suits you."
"Thanks," Cassie said, managing a small smile. "Do you think it's enough?"
Maria pursed her lips, considering. "It's a good start. But the real test will be how you handle yourself in public. Which brings me to my next point – we need groceries."
