But Mildred kept chattering cheerfully, utterly ignoring her frantic head-shaking. "You two went to school together, didn'tcha? Oh it'll be just like old times to get y'all reacquainted! Lemme get her to come on over..."
Despite Kayla's horrified attempts to wave her off, Mildred's devious smirk only widened as she turned her attention back to the phone call. "Shoot, why don'tcha come by now? Kayla and I'd just love to get caught up!"
Muttering colorful phrases under her breath, Kayla slumped back in her chair, dread pooling in her stomach. Could this trip home really be upended so quickly?
An hour later, Mildred ushered Tiffany inside with a proud flourish. "Well ain't this a pretty picture! My two favorite hometown gals reunited!"
"Mildred, it's such an honor." Tiffany enveloped the older woman in an achingly glamorous air-kiss, not a fleck of makeup smudged by the light breeze.
