Chapter 2: To be unloved.
Daniel looked at Anya darkly.
“What do you say?” he asked. He had never thought she would say these words.
“Let’s get a divorce,” Anaya repeated.
“Have you forgotten that you were the one who used unhandled means to force me to marry you? What? A little injury and you can’t stand it?” Daniel sneered.
Anya suppressed her need to cry. How could she forget that this man hates her so much? Every time she met him, she would be reminded of his hate.
She could not stand his gaze at the moment. His eyes were full of disgust as they stared down at her.
“Mr. Shaw hates me. It is understandable. I was an idiot who did not know her place. Yes, I am afraid of death,” Anya answered.
“It is hard to imagine you would give up so easily. Didn’t you like money so much? You are too stuck around for money?” he asked her.
“Yes, life is important. I am not truly a member of your family and don’t expect to be protected by you. So, it is best I leave,” Anya said.
Anya felt she had never been more clear headed.
“I know you were forced into this marriage. I apologize. It is best to go out separate ways,” Anya said.
She was not willing to risk her life. She wondered why she has never considered this before. All other members of the Shaw family, even those who were married in, just like she had security. Everyone except Anya.
The Shaw family were very important people and had enough enemies to fill the sea. This is why everyone in the family was tightly protected. All except Anya.
“Tell me why,” Daniel insisted. For some reason, it was hard for him to believe that the girl who loved him more than anything would actually want a divorce.
“Your family has too many enemies. I don’t want to get involved in the conflict of big wigs like you,” Anya answered.
“And you did not know this when you wormed your way into my family?” he asked.
“Maybe I thought I would be part of your family so, I will get security and thought I would be fine,” Anya jokes. She was mocking herself at this moment, but his next words chilled her heart.
“And you thought you were worthy? You are a child of a single mother. Your mother has worked as an Escort for decades taking you around to who knows where. You barely have a degree or job but found a way to force my grandfather to insist I marry you. But you thought you were part of my family?” he asked.
Anya felt stifled by this. Her history was a stain in her life. People really believe that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and her tree was an Escort.
Her mother was everything to her. She had made decisions for Anya’s sake and Anya would never look down on her mother.
To hear the man she loved talking about her that way, chilled her heart.
Anya nodded, holding back tears. “I am just a small daughter of an Escort. I did not know my place and forced my way into your family. I should not have done that. I apologize. So, it is good that I have finally learned. It is best we go our separate ways,” Anya said.
Her words made him feel uncomfortable. But he held back. It was that face again. Both of them did not notice that there was someone by the door.
“Mr. Shaw,” A woman said and both of them looked her way. When Anya looked at who had spoken, she could not help but frown. This woman looked like her.
When Daniel saw the woman by the door, his mind cleared. He could not believe he almost felt sympathy for Anya.
“What is it, Selene?” Daniel asked. Anya noticed that his voice was much softer than when he spoke to her. Even his eyes were much softer.
She could not believe that Daniel could look at someone softly. She found it hard to breathe.
“The department head is on the line asking for you,” Selene informed Daniel. He nodded and stood up to leave.
“Do not cause trouble. I will be back,” Daniel said and left behind the woman.
When the doors shut, Anya was left to her thoughts. She recognized the voice of the woman Daniel called Selene. It was the one who had picked Daniel’s call when she had called earlier.
But why did that woman look so much like her?
Before she could think too deeply, her phone started ringing. Anya was not sure how they had gotten her phone back. When her ringtone started going off, she looked around for her phone.
She realized it was on a table beside her. She picked it up and answered.
“Hello?”
“Is this Anya Jones?” someone asked.
“Yes, this is her,” Anya answered.
“I am calling from First Memorial Hospital about your mother.”
These words made Anya sit up straight. Her mother? Did something happen?
She could not keep calm.
“Please calm down, Miss Jones. She is fine. I called because you have not made payment on her bill this month,” the person immediately clarified.
Anya calmed down very quickly, before frowning. The bill. She recalled that she had work to deliver in a few days to get her payment and panicked.
Looking at her injured arm, she became worried that the injury would affect her work.
“I will make payments at the end of this week. I apologize,” she apologized. It would be shameful if anyone knew that the great Daniel Shaw’s wife was suffering financially.
“Alright. I will have the invoice forwarded to your email,” the person said.
“Thank you,” Anya answered and ended the call.
“I am really stupid,” Anya muttered, holding back tears. Since she married Daniel, he had not bothered with her. Even though she was married to one of the richest men in the country, she could not afford her mother’s hospital bill and had borrowed so much money. She was in debt and yet, there were still bills to pay.
She never got any benefits from marrying Daniel, why did she stupidly marry him?
The door to the hospital room opened afterwards and Selene walked in with a tray of food.
“Mr. Shaw asked me to bring your meal,” Selene said, walking closer.
When both women were finally close enough, they seemed to mutually observe each other.
“You sure do look like me, alright. You even managed to use my face and pretend to be me, so you can marry Daniel,” Selene sneered, her eyes full of jealousy.
Anya frowned at this, completely confused. She used her face? Pretended to be her?
“What do you mean by pretending to be you?” Anya asked.
“Why pretend as though you don’t know? If it wasn’t for that face of yours, would Daniel’s grandfather have asked both of you to get married?” Selene said.
“What?” Anya asked. She felt as though her head had exploded. Was her face the reason?
“If it wasn’t for that face, would Daniel have agreed? You got married because you had my face. You don’t deserve Daniel. He is in love with me,” Selene said.
Anya found it hard to breathe. Daniel was in love with Selene? Wait, what does she mean? Anya recalled why Old Master Shaw asked her to marry Daniel. This was not the reason. What was Selene talking about? Was there something she did not know?
Selene saw the confused look on Anaya’s face and felt gratified. She looked at the food in her hand and heard Daniel coming from outside.
“You don’t deserve him,” Selene said and dropped the tray of food on herself.
At that moment, Daniel opened the door when he heard the crash and saw Selene covered in food.
“What do you think you are doing?” Daniel asked Anaya coldly.
