Chapter 9 - Heartache
Christopher had a vein of cruelty. The cigarette in his hand was blinking. The crystal ashtray had piled up a bunch of cigarette butts.
"Mr. Loomis, Mrs. Loomis has not been found yet."
The subordinate came to report with trepidation.
Looking at Christopher's gloomy face, everyone was so scared that their legs went weak.
Christopher usually looks indifference. Everyone thought that he would not be so anger like this.
But this time, Christopher got angry at everyone because of Leslie.
"I'll give you the last chance. Go to Mercy Hospital tomorrow and keep watching to find Leslie. Every exit must be guarded strictly! Report to me once she appears!"
Christopher gave commands strictly like that.
That woman, Leslie, can’t escape from his control. He had to get her back.
The next day Leslie was better under the care of Phoenix.
For breakfast, she ate a nutritious meal. The porridge was made of lean meat, fried eggs that were golden, two delicious small dishes and delicate buns.
No one had ever been so kind to her. She was moved.
"You should eat more. Your father is in the hospital now. Doctors will take good care of him. Please take care of yourself. Don't forget that you are still a mother of a baby."
Phoenix handed her a pair of chopsticks.
Leslie was deeply impressed.
Christopher saw her with cold face for three years. She insisted on being married with Christopher once. All her family was opposing her marriage. But this is her choice made by own. She could not backtrack.
So she must get over all the difficulties she met. Phoenix's kindness to her made her feel warm again.
"Don't look at me like a poor kitten. I didn’t bully you. Hurry up, I'll take you to the hospital." Phoenix patted her shoulder and said.
She gaze was full of innocence and cuteness. Inexplicably, Phoenix cannot control the speed of his heart.
He and Leslie were friends online.
He never thought he would meet her in real world. That feeling was wonderful. Phoenix felt a touch of pity for this poor woman.
Phoenix had worked in a hospital before, so he still had hospital uniforms at home.
They wore lab coats with masks like other doctors.
Nobody could recognize which department they were.
They did not attract much attention.
However, when they arrived at Terry Ward's ward as the news said, they did not found him.
On the contrary, the entrance to the ward had several bodyguards dressed in black suits.
Leslie knew these people. They are Christopher's subordinates.
She understood immediately that it was just a game to lure her in.
In order to be unnoticed by these bodyguards, they left the hospital quickly.
"Don't worry, Leslie. Your father is not there maybe because he's safe."
"But I'm still worried. My dad is old with poor health. He may be stimulated by these things."
Leslie walked into the large living room.
"You should go to bed and have a rest. Don't worry, I will send someone to find out the location of your daddy immediately. I will give you an answer by tomorrow."
Phoenix’s eyes were full of softness and sentiment.
Although Leslie was so worried that she couldn’t fall asleep, she had to back to her room.
Next morning, Leslie came out from her room with dark circles.
Phoenix let the Filipino maid put something away.
She saw the words “Terry Ward” on the newspaper.
Leslie ran toward the Filipino maid and snatched the newspaper.
She saw, “Ward's CEO, Terry Ward, died of cerebral hemorrhage today, announcing the complete collapse of the Ward’s family.”
Leslie only felt headache as her breathe and blood were abnormal.
Her father, the one who loved her most, died in this way.
Her chest felt like to be torn apart. The pain made her stand unsteadily.
Finally, Leslie passed out.
When Leslie woke up, she found herself lying in a ward.
She screamed. She didn't want to be in the hospital. She would be found by Christopher.
Phoenix saw Leslie's reaction. He pulled her back to the bed hurriedly.
"Please lie down. You've been in a coma for three days!"
"There are Christopher's subordinates in the hospital. I have to leave!"
"Don't worry, this is a hospital invested by the Steffen family. There won't be any of Christopher's subordinates. You can rest here peacefully."
Phoenix tried to calm her down.
He relaxed himself when she woke up. These three days, he also had a very hard time. He was afraid that she cannot wake any more.
"Please take me to see my father. I'm going to see him."
Leslie murmured without crying.
"Leslie, listen to me. Take it easy. You were in a coma for three days. Your father's remains have been cremated."
Suddenly Leslie smiled, and then laughed wildly.
But she smiled more exaggeratedly, Phoenix felt more heartbroken. Leslie's eyes were so lost, like a puppet without a soul.
