Chapter 1
A mental hospital in the suburbs in Jiangcheng.
Mae Ye stood in front of a cold iron window with a big belly. She had been 8 months pregnant. She looked at the sky from afar, but her eyes were washed-out.
When she got pregnant, she was imprisoned here by her fiance Mark Mu.
Bang!
Quickly behind her came the sound of the door kicked wide open. Mae turned around and saw Mark storming into the room furiously, "Mae! Grandfather died of his injury this morning. Are you satisfied now?"
Mark grabbed her and beat the left side of her face. Her eardrum buzzed. Staggering back a few steps, she subconsciously curved her body, and her arms embraced her stomach.
"I didn't! Mark, I didn't!" She cried. "How many times do you want me to explain? When I saw Grandpa he had already fallen downstairs. I even wanted to send him to the hospital at that time. You all just misunderstood..."
Before she said her words, Mark's eyes were glaring red, and his palm secured around her jaw and neck, pinning her against the wall.
"Misunderstood? There is a witness! I have evidence! Material evidence, all here! There is no misunderstanding. I thought you were just willful and arrogant, but I never thought that you were a snake. A scorpion!"
"I’m not..."
"You are!"
Mark was an enraged beast, his fingers folded tight.
Mae choked out of breath, her pale face turned red, the air in her lungs emptied, and her brain fainted. She struggled and struck Mark's chest desperately, but it did not help.
Her eyelids turned out when she thought she would be strangled to death by Mark.
Mark threw her to the side.
Her weakened body lost its balance, and she hit the corner of the table. The pain quickly spread from her stomach to her whole body and blood flowed from her legs.
There was a smell of blood in the air.
"It hurts. My stomach hurts..."
"You deserve it!"
Her eyes began to panic, as she climbed towards Mark's feet with difficulty. Her bloody hands grasped his trousers tightly, "Please, help my child, I beg you. This is your child, too... "
Mark appreciated her painful expression and kicked her away, "My child? Don't be ridiculous. I never touched you! I only love one woman and it is not you! That is a wild bastard in your stomach!”
Mark kicked her to lie down on the ground, her ear buzzing from the beating. She is shocked to see the unbelievable hatred from Mark's eyes.
"What did you say? This is your child!"
Without looking at her, he left.
"Don't ask for a doctor. Let her continue to hurt. He told the guard at the door. “If she dies, throw her in the morgue. If she doesn't, give her some drugs, so that she’ll go insane."
"No! Mark, please come back, you don’t understand..."
Mae gazes at the disappearance of Mark's back.
Under her body, a pool of amniotic fluid drenched her clothes. No matter who the father is, her child is innocent.
Mae desperately pleads with the guard at the door but he ignores her.
The next day, she sat mumbling. Staring blankly at the wall. Her mind marinating in a daze of panicked anxiety, her eyes fixated on a fruit knife lying on the table.
Breathing laboriously, she picked it up and pointed it towards her belly.
"Aggghh…" She cried.
The thought of slashing her belly across made her scream.
While she cried and muttered wordless heartbreak, a stream of liquid suddenly seeped through the crack of the door, and then a lighter bounced and clattered on the hard concrete.
Both of her hands shook while holding the fruit knife. Her heartbreak turned into terror as the lighter ignited the gasoline. She looked straight at the door and shouted.
“Fire… fire!”
She kept inching to the corner of the small room, avoiding the burning gasoline and yelling towards the door, "There's a fire, help! Help..."
"Miss Ye, Mr. Mu said that he changes his mind, and he asks that you forget about him. And that you should better accept your fate." The laid back words of the guard behind the door made her sweat cold. Her eyes and face were lifeless.
Mae sat down and collapsed on the ground.
The base of the door is now catching fire. As the smoke grew thicker, she vaguely heard the guard's footsteps go away, and the despair she has never felt in her whole life drowned her.
Remembering the day of how happy she was when she had just gotten pregnant, she could not wait to go to Mark’s house to share the good news with him.
Unexpectedly, it was also the day the old man fell down the stairs.
She had heard a commotion downstairs. Worried, she went down to check.
At the same time, her sister Yvonne and Mark came in from the door. Yvonne insisted that Mae had pushed the old man and Mark kept her in this mental hospital for eight months.
She thought she was just being tricked and Mark would let her out when the truth was found out.
Only now, however, did she realize that everything was false.
“Mark wants me to die. My poor child will never walk this world.”
The flame engulfed her room, her vision was blurred, and she finally closed her eyes in despair.
