Chapter 6
Melanie didn't think much of it, but the problem was that the baby she was carrying wasn't Elijah's. Even if it were a boy, it wouldn't be from the Grayson family's bloodline.
However, she didn't dare to speak it out at this critical moment.
Soon, the doctor came out with the test results. Edward quickly stood up and asked eagerly, "Doctor, is it a boy or a girl?"
The doctor adjusted his glasses and replied, "Actually, they're twins. Both are boys."
Hearing this, not only did the usually calm Edward become surprised, but even Melanie was dumbfounded.
One baby was fine, but twins? This was going to be rough… Melanie couldn't help but resent the man from that night.
Edward took the report and thanked the doctor. When he looked at Melanie, his gaze carried a hint of complicated emotions.
Who would have thought that one reckless night would lead to twins?
They were his sons. Edward, who had never cared much for romance, couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement.
"Let's go. We'll tell Grandpa the news."
Melanie didn't have time to think about anything else and followed Edward back to the emergency room.
When Ophelia saw Edward return, she quickly asked, "Edward, how did it go? Did they find out? Is it a boy or a girl?"
Edward nodded and replied, "They're twins, both boys."
Everyone's expressions changed upon hearing this news. Luca and Sapphire were overjoyed, but the others looked displeased.
This country bumpkin was carrying twin boys. If they had still been in the countryside, sons might not be considered so valuable, but in the Grayson family, they were worth their weight in gold.
For a moment, Melanie was envied by everyone. However, Ophelia didn't care about that. She hurriedly informed the doctor of the news.
The doctor found it absurd. Xavier's condition was critical. How could a few words possibly revive him? However, he knew the Grayson family was no ordinary family, so he followed their request.
After they informed Xavier, who was on the brink of death, what happened next was a miracle. The monitors showed his vital signs almost returning to normal.
The doctor couldn't believe it but felt ecstatic. He immediately applied another round of emergency treatment measures.
Ten minutes later, Xavier regained consciousness. The first thing he asked for was his great-grandsons.
Ophelia and the others had entered the ward. When they saw Xavier was out of danger, they couldn't hold back their tears.
"Xavier, it's true. You're going to have two great-grandsons. Melanie is carrying twins. We've had it checked. They're both boys."
Although Xavier was weak, he couldn't help but laugh out loud.
"Good! Very good! It seems God has granted me a blessing, allowing me to live long enough to hold my precious great-grandsons."
Seeing this, Luca and the others felt relieved. Although the Grayson family was thriving, they couldn't afford to lose Xavier. With him around, their family had strong backing.
Xavier's recovery from the brink of death was truly a blessing.
"Dad, don't say that. You'll live a long and healthy life. It won't just be two great-grandsons. You'll have even more soon! Susan is also pregnant and has been showing signs recently," said Dalton Grayson, Xavier's second son and Luca's younger brother. He was eager not to let Luca steal the limelight.
Xavier nodded. "Well, I'll take that blessing."
As Xavier was out of danger, the family gathered outside the room to let him rest. However, the atmosphere in the hallway became tense. Dalton glanced at Melanie with a hint of contempt.
"Quite a surprise, isn't it? Luca, your daughter-in-law is carrying the first great-grandsons of our family. What a coincidence! Congratulations."
His words seemed congratulatory but carried an undertone of doubt. Could it really be such a coincidence? Were the babies Melanie was carrying truly part of the Grayson bloodline?
Luca remained unfazed, giving a light chuckle. "Melanie really is our lucky star. We owe her a lot this time. Since everyone's here, I might as well announce that Edward's getting married in two days. If you're free, please come and help out."
Everyone was dumbfounded upon hearing this. "Edward is getting married? Who's the bride?"
Most assumed that Edward would marry someone from an influential family, given his abilities and prospects.
Luca nodded. "Yes, he's getting married. He's not young anymore, so it's time for him to settle down. He's marrying Melanie. It was Elijah's dying wish."
The excuse was flimsy at best, but with the decision made, Luca could only press forward.
Everyone was taken aback, hardly able to believe their eyes. Luca had always been seen as wise and was highly regarded by Xavier. It was hard to imagine that he would make such a foolish decision.
Melanie had already won Xavier's favor because of the twins she was carrying, so having Edward marry her seemed unnecessary and unwise. He could have married someone from a more influential family background.
But would anyone say it out loud? Of course not. Luca's misstep was an opportunity for them.
If Edward married someone like Melanie, he wouldn't gain any valuable support from his wife's side. Consequently, his career might not be as smooth sailing in the future.
Dalton laughed heartily, offering his congratulations. "That's great! This way, Edward can take good care of Melanie's children. We can all be at ease. We'll certainly help out over the next couple of days and spread the good news."
Dalton was happy to see Edward jeopardize his own career. Luca understood this all too well but couldn't make a fuss.
After all, Melanie was Elijah's widow and a woman from the countryside. If she hadn't been pregnant, she wouldn't have stood a chance of becoming Edward's wife.
"We're keeping the wedding small. No need to make a big fuss about it," Luca said.
The others chuckled inwardly. The most promising son was marrying a country bumpkin. What a joke!
No wonder they didn't want a grand wedding. Such an embarrassing affair was best kept from too many people.
After exchanging pleasantries, they left the hospital and headed back home.
In less than a day, Melanie had become the Grayson family's favorite. Previously, they had welcomed her warmly for Elijah's sake. Now, they treated her well solely because of the twins she was carrying.
Sapphire felt triumphant that her grandchildren would be the first great-grandsons of the family. After years of competing with her sisters-in-law, she had finally come out on top.
