Nina didn't know, nor did she want to question or guess. What difference would it make whether she knew or not? To Shane, she was nothing more than a passing amusement. Dwelling on the question was nothing but self-inflicted humiliation.
The corners of her lips curved into a faint smile. Lowering her head, she replied softly, just as Shane expected, "Okay."
Her compliance stirred a strange feeling in Shane's chest. Something about the woman before him seemed off.
But a signal from the guards outside indicated that time was up. He couldn't stay too long, so he quickly gave a few more instructions and left.
Hearing the door close behind her, Nina emptied her mind and collapsed onto the large bed.
Now that she knew David and Abigail had no semblance of familial affection for her, she gave up struggling. She no longer hoped for emotional reciprocation from them, but she also wouldn't let their schemes succeed.
