The next morning, I was woken up by the sound of the phone ringing. It was Owen calling.
He said he was already at the airport in Jorenthia, preparing to head home before going abroad for two years of training. I wished him a safe trip.
We had already said most of our goodbyes at the farewell dinner the night before. After a brief chat, I hung up the phone.
I assumed Evan was still asleep, so I planned to sneak out. But as soon as I opened the door, I saw him cooking oatmeal in the open kitchen in dark-colored loungewear.
It was quite a sight—domestic and cozy, reminiscent of the sweet life I had imagined after marriage. Unfortunately, Evan and I would never have that day. His heart belonged to his "baby".
