Chapter 12

When Abigail laid eyes on the person in front of her, Eleanor, her pupils dilated instantly. Wasn't she the wild girl from the village? How could she be so stunning? "You're Eleanor?" Abigail asked in disbelief. "Is there anything else?" Eleanor replied, casting a contemptuous glance at Abigail with her almond-shaped eyes. This infuriated Abigail. She had always been surrounded by admirers and had never been spoken to this way. "Eleanor, I'm your cousin! Apologize to me immediately! Or I'll tell my grandparents when I return and ask them to punish you!" Abigail declared, her eyes wide and full of pride. "Don't think joining the Hampton family makes you a phoenix. Trash should know its place. Your whole family is just good-for-nothings. If you cross me, I'll make you pay!" Eleanor observed Abigail's conceited and domineering demeanor thoughtfully. It was true that Abigail's father, Oliver Hampton, was the most talented among the three brothers in business. Over the years, most of the Hampton family's assets had been entrusted to Oliver, and he had continued to grow and expand the family's business. Undoubtedly, Oliver was the most likely heir to the Hampton family. Abigail was equally competitive. She had excelled since childhood and was part of the elite class. "But so what? The Hampton family is the exception to the rule." Ignoring Abigail's words, Eleanor walked past her and into the classroom. Abigail gazed at Eleanor's retreating figure in disbelief. The thought of losing face in front of a wild girl angered her. She lunged forward, aiming to slap Eleanor, but Eleanor swiftly caught her hand. A powerful sense of authority suddenly bore down on her. Abigail didn't even realize that her legs were shaking uncontrollably. "If you want to stay safe, stay away from me," Eleanor whispered into Abigail's ear as she leaned in. Although her eyes were composed, they sent chills down Abigail's spine, as if she were staring at death itself. No matter how arrogant Abigail was, she was just a sheltered young lady. She had never encountered such a fierce gaze before. Terrified, she fled in haste.
