I couldn't afford to waste time—escaping was my only priority. But where could I go in this desolate wilderness?
Suddenly, I heard the rustling of footsteps. They sent a jolt of terror through my body.
It was Caleb! He had caught up.
I quickly held my breath and curled into a tight ball. I didn't dare to move an inch for fear of being discovered.
"Evelyn, come out!" Caleb panted, stopping in his tracks. He looked around, shouting furiously, "Stop hiding! This whole wilderness is under my control. Where can you run?"
He kicked a stone in frustration. "Believe me, I'll set this entire patch of grass on fire, and then let's see where you hide!" he shouted in rage.
A shiver ran down my spine as cold sweat broke out. He was truly a madman.
But what could I do? Was I supposed to walk into my death? Despair weighed on me as I leaned against a rock. It was over. There was no hope now.
