I stood with my back to Ethan, unable to see his expression, but I could feel it—when I spoke those words, the hand gripping my wrist trembled, and the atmosphere in the stairwell suddenly grew heavy, filled with a quiet sadness that seemed to radiate from him, slowly enveloping the space around us.
