The lawyer seemed to know neither of them would agree, so he immediately took a step back and said, "If that's not possible, could we at least take a look through the window?"
I anxiously glanced at the two officers. But they remained unmoved.
"No," they said firmly. "No one can come near."
Even when the lawyer pulled out his credentials, the officers didn't so much as blink. Their refusal was absolute, with no room for negotiation.
The hope I had been clinging to slowly slipped away. I coldly studied the two men in front of me, and a suspicion that had been forming in my mind became clearer.
At that moment, the lawyer returned, defeated.
Seeing his worn-out expression, I pressed my lips together and said, "Let's go."
Anger simmered inside me, and after throwing out those words in a cold tone, I turned on my heel and left, leaving Lyla and the others behind. I walked quickly as if that would somehow dissipate the frustration burning inside me.
