Edward couldn't quite pinpoint the emotions he was experiencing. It felt as if he had been rejected at every turn. He had wrongly assumed Mayra was similar to Serena.
As they were talking, Mayra's phone suddenly rang. Upon seeing the caller ID, she didn't seem surprised. Edward didn't say anything further and simply left the hospital.
Mayra answered the phone as she walked toward the balcony, "Hey, Andy."
"Are you being bullied at school?"
It had been a while since Mayra last heard his voice, so it felt strangely unfamiliar—especially when it bore such a rare show of concern. "You shouldn't believe in gossip, Andy. I'm perfectly fine."
Mayra quickly moved on to a different topic, asking, "Are you and Isa doing well abroad?"
"Do you not miss me, Mayra? You haven't even bothered to call me this past month."
Mayra fell silent. Although it was a completely ordinary statement, it somehow struck her as odd.
"You told me not to call unless it was important, remember?"
