Mayra wisely kept her distance, choosing a secluded, unnoticeable corner to sit down. In the row ahead, a group of girls, each holding a romance novel, were gossiping about Brandon and Serena.
"I don't get what Brandon sees in Serena," one girl said.
"Exactly! Serena doesn't have any status or background. I heard her mom is even mentally ill and constantly fantasizing about marrying into a wealthy family," another added.
"Given that she's always changing boyfriends, she's not even clean. Brandon must be blind to like her," a third girl chimed in.
Their conversation grew more heated, fueled by jealousy that they weren't the ones with Brandon. As Mayra's thoughts were disturbed by the noise, she lowered her head and tapped her pencil on the desk.
"Quiet," she said.
