All vital signs were stable.
Broderick felt a pang of sympathy. After all, Mayra was just a 16-year-old girl, the same age as his niece.
"Gordon…" Mayra whispered.
He saw her lips move slightly. Although he couldn't hear her over the sound of the heart monitor, he knew who she was calling for.
"Stop dreaming. No matter how much you call for him, he won't come to you. Andy is getting engaged today. He can't possibly abandon his newly-wed bride to come look for you.
"You're lucky you met me. In your condition, no other hospital would've taken you in. A delay of even a moment and you could've died on the way."
Mayra was on a ventilator when she slowly opened her eyes. The bright surgical lights made it hard to see anything clearly. The steady beeping of the monitor was the only reminder that she was still alive.
It seemed like someone was talking to her, but she couldn't make out what they were saying. She didn't know how much time had passed.
