"Jane, are you okay?"
Frederick released his hold on Jane, his voice laced with urgency.
Jane blinked her eyes open. The mournful whistle of the wind still echoed in her ears, yet she felt not a single breeze against her skin.
"Brother Frederick, I'm fine," she replied in that sweet, childlike voice of hers.
Her bright, curious eyes darted around, taking in their unfamiliar surroundings. They were inside an ancient, weathered house with crumbling walls. "Brother Frederick, where are we?"
"This is the ruins of an old city," he answered.
Jane turned her gaze back to him, studying his face. "Brother Frederick, have you really been here before?"
"Yes," he nodded firmly. "I have."
Jane tilted her head, her expression turning serious. "Before or after the time travel?"
At her question, Frederick's deep eyes dimmed slightly. His lips pressed into a tight line as he lowered his head, looking almost pitiful. "Jane, are you doubting me now?"
