Chapter 16

It was obvious what she meant. For so many years, she has kept her distance from any man, for fear of causing unnecessary trouble. However, Sean Qiao had fallen sleep in her bedroom, by accident. If word comes out, nobody would blame him. By default, she’d be the topic of gossip, an immoral woman who, as far as everyone was concerned, had seduced the president. “I was going to leave. I didn’t want to get involved, especially since you’re an attractive single woman. It was your friend who suddenly had to leave and asked me to take care of you and your daughter.” Sean’s eyes focused on Vera‘s somewhat messy morning face. “Mr. Qiao, please don’t speak of this to anyone else. I’m a single mother. People use the word contaminated to describe me. I’m not that kind of woman, I’m not out to seduce you.” Vera has given up on dating a long time ago. She was not the kind who would seduce a man with a family. Sean Qiao could easily make it look like she had come after him. Sean Qiao said nothing, but his face darkened a bit. He took a step towards her, making Vera uncomfortable. She stepped back, afraid of what he might do. “What do you mean?” Panic rose up her throat. “It’s interesting, you say you aren’t interested in me. I think you arranged everything. You started drinking after I arrived. Your friend suddenly leaves as soon as I bring you home. I think you set this up.” He had backed her into the wall. His face was so close to hers, he could feel her breath. It faintly smelled of wine. Quickly, she denied his accusations. “You’re twisting the facts.” This is what she hated the most. Any sort of ambiguity when it came to men, it really got on her nerves. Since the birth of the child, she has decided that she will never have close contact with men again. Nor will she marry, or do anything that might jeopardize her child’s well-being. This man who had only known her for a few days seemed intent on slandering her and accusing her of trying to seduce him. “Once again, I warn you to be careful how you act.” “Mr. Qiao, please keep your distance from me. How you think of me is none of my business, but please give me some respect.” Vera spoke solemnly, her eyes flashing in anger. Sean saw that he’d angered her, and she was beginning to lose control. He grabbed Vera‘s hands and held them against his chest, forcibly pressing her against the wall. His eyes were cold and dangerous. “Mummy...” The rising tension was broken by Luna’s sleepy voice, and Vera breathed a sigh of relief. Sean Qiao released her hands, and Vera Qin pushed him away forcefully. Quickly, she walked to Luna’s side. “Why, you’ve woken up so early. Do you want to go back to sleep?” “No, I’m not sleepy anymore.” Luna got up, bypassed Vera and went directly to Sean Qiao’s side. Gently, she took his big hand in hers. “Uncle thank you, I slept well.” The child’s sincere gaze startled Sean. “You’re welcome, Luna.” He looked at his watch. “It’s time for Mommy and Uncle to go to work.” As soon as Sean Qiao finished speaking, he raised his head and looked at Vera, but Luna eagerly tugged at his hand. “Uncle, Mommy’s cooking is delicious. Have breakfast before you go to work.” “Luna, no.” Vera Qin hurriedly stopped Luna, she was afraid that Luna’s behavior would be described as a scheming trick by Sean Qiao. “Mummy, you were drunk last night, and uncle took care of you. We should have breakfast with him.” The little girl didn’t understand how things worked between adults. She had no idea how her mother was feeling at the moment. She only knew that she likes Uncle very much. “Luna.” Vera Qin’s voice was now more firm. She wanted to discipline her child right then and there, but it didn’t seem appropriate to do it in front of her boss. “Mommy, we can’t owe anyone a favor. We can pay him back by giving him breakfast.” Vera herself had taught this to her daughter. Her child had conveniently remembered it now. Sean Qiao listened to the conversation between mother and daughter, looking at the little girl who was still holding his hand. A part of him was touched at her words. He raised his eyes and stared at Vera Qin coldly. “Luna, Uncle needs to go.” Speaking to Luna, Sean Qiao’s tone was much more gentle than his usually cold voice. Sean Qiao turned around and left after speaking, but Luna’s hand still clenched tightly and refused to let go. “Uncle, Mommy said that skipping breakfast is bad for your health. Uncle must have breakfast before going to work.” Luna’s eyes were pleading this time. Eating is a trivial matter, but she really wanted to spend more time with Uncle. He didn’t know how to answer the child. The child will be disappointed if he refuses, but it seemed inappropriate to stay.
